Share Our Small Business Grants with Asian American & Pacific Islander Businesses

This year, we will be awarding grants to small business owners who have made a significant, lasting impact within their communities. In honor of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we will be awarding Asian American & Pacific Islander small business owners with a brick and mortar location impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic with a $1,000 grant. Please note that real estate brokerage offices are ineligible; however, small and owner-occupied property owners may apply (six units or less). According to the 2021 State of Asia America Report:
  • Over 19 million AAPI’s live in the country, accounting for 5.6% of the total U.S. population
  • Asian American Median Household Income – $93,759
  • Pacific Islander Median Household Income – $66,464
  • Top languages spoken by AAPI LEP (Language English Proficient) speakers are: Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Korean
Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI specific data:
  • About 12% of total AAPIs (2.7 million) live in the Midwest. Though AAPIs makeup less than 4% of the regional population.
  • More AAPIs live in Cook County than anywhere else in Illinois, which include Chicago and the city of Elgin, comprising nearly half of the state’s AAPI population.
  • More than 30% of the Asian Indians and Chinese subgroups who live in the Midwest live in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI area.
  • Top AAPI Subgroups include:
    1. Filipino
    2. Asian Indian
    3. Chinese
    4. Korean

BARRIERS TO AAPI HOMEOWNERSHIP

Credit FilesAAPI families prefer to make their purchases in cash at the time of purchase and avoid debt, resulting in limited credit history.Language Barriers而大约70%的AAPI’s are Limited English Proficient (LEP), translation of forms and contracts remains a barrier to clients.Fair HousingHeighted discrimination from Covid-19 still remains an issue for AAPI’s seeking to be approved for housing.DownpaymentMajority of AAPI’s live in high cost areas, resulting in needing more time to save.

There are over 3,795 incidents of racism and discrimination targeted towards Asian Americans reported between March 19, 2020 and February 28, 2021. “Civil rights violations, such as workplace discrimination, refusal of service and being barred from transportation, as well as online and verbal harassment, physical violence all account for many of total incidents.
